Cormac Murphy-O'Connor
Cormac Murphy-O'Connor was born in Berkshire in 1932. He began training to become a priest in Rome in 1950 and received a degree in theology. He was ordained in 1956 and became engaged in pastoral ministry in Portsmouth and Farnham. In 1970 he was appointed parish priest of the Immaculate Conception church in Portswood, Southampton and, soon after, rector of the Venerable English College, Rome. He was elected as Bishop of Arundel and Brighton in 1977. In 2000 he was elected Archbishop of Westminster, becoming the head of the Catholic Church in England and Wales. He retired from this post in 2009.
