Editorial & Marketing Assistant

Sacristy Ltd (trading as Sacristy Press) is a micro-publisher based in Durham, primarily publishing theology and history, including historical fiction. We are a friendly, close-knit team, all working part time to publish around 20 titles per year, and pride ourselves on giving close attention to each publication. To facilitate expansion, an Editorial & Marketing Assistant is sought, providing marketing and administrative support.

This is a part-time position on a rolling monthly contract, working from home. The hourly rate will be £10 per hour, with a three-month probationary period.

The successful candidate will support the Operations Director and the Publishing Director in maintaining excellent communication between staff and freelancers, authors, reviewers, and customers. This will primarily be accomplished through:

  1. Maintaining a strong social media presence and exploring additional promotional channels. 
  2. Assuming primary responsibility for a weekly blog post (usually written by an author) to appear on the Sacristy Press website.
  3. Writing marketing copy for books ahead of publication.
  4. Identifying and contacting (by phone and email) retailers, other potential customers, and reviewers to promote our products.
  5. Assuming primary responsibility for ensuring that our various production and marketing databases are accurate and up to date, informing the directors of any omissions or concerns.
  6. Maintaining a marketing calendar and ensuring relevant events are not overlooked.
  7. Collating sales reports from suppliers and uploading the data into our royalty management software on a monthly basis.
  8. Ensuring that book metadata on our title management software and the Sacristy Press website are complete and up to date.
  9. Acknowledging project submissions and adding them to our CRM software, requesting additional information from authors where necessary.
  10. Taking primary responsibility for ensuring that all e-mails sent to the “enquiries” mailbox (and other shared mailboxes) are dealt with in a timely manner.
  11. Compiling regular emails to each of Sacristy Press’s mailing lists, including customers, retailers and reviewers, and quarterly emails to authors.
  12. Any other reasonable administrative, editorial, or marketing support tasks, as required from time to time.

It is envisaged that these tasks will take between 5 and 10 hours per week, with the potential for additional hours should they be required. The Editorial & Marketing Assistant will provide their own suitable workspace with adequate privacy, safety and security, and jointly report to the Operations Director and Publishing Director. Regular meetings will be held by telephone or video with one or more of the directors.

Essential Attributes:

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral
  • An attention to detail and well disciplined at maintaining highly accurate digital data
  • The creativity to write engaging marketing material
  • Highly self-motivated with excellent organisational skills
  • The ability work effectively with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and possessing a range of religious beliefs
  • Good IT skills, including email, word processing, and web-based software
  • Familiarity with a variety of social media platforms
  • A willingness to learn new skills and software packages
  • The ability to work well with colleagues in a time sensitive environment
  • Good working knowledge of religious culture, and the Church of England in particular
  • Good working knowledge of GDPR and related legislation

Desirable Attributes:

  • Competence with any of the following software tools:
    • Graphic design software
    • Sharepoint
    • Stison
  • Working knowledge of the publishing industry
  • Familiarity with online video platforms
