Mark is a theologian, author, and speaker whose work bridges faith, history, and the everyday experiences that shape our lives. Originally from Greenville, South Carolina, he grew up in Florida and Virginia, where his early fascination with history and its impact on people’s stories began. This passion led him to earn an A.B. in History from The College of William & Mary, followed by a Master of Theological Studies from Duke Divinity School and a PhD from the University of Durham. His doctoral research focused on the role of delight in the theology of Augustine of Hippo—a theme that continues to inspire his writing and speaking, as he often explores how joy and wonder intersect with faith and human flourishing.
Mark’s ministry has taken him to a wide range of communities, from parishes in Maryland and North Carolina to the post-industrial pit villages of County Durham and the serene countryside of Oxfordshire. Currently, he serves as Canon Theologian for the Diocese of Swansea and Brecon and Vicar of St Mary’s Brecon in Wales, roles that allow him to engage deeply with both the spiritual and practical needs of his congregation. His online writings often reflect on the beauty of ordinary life, the importance of community, and the ways faith can offer meaning in challenging times.
In addition to his pastoral work, Mark has taught theology at Cranmer Hall in Durham and served as Dean of Residential Training and Acting Principal at St Michael’s College, Cardiff, where he also lectured at Cardiff University. He later spent two years as Vice-Principal of St Stephen’s House, Oxford. A sought-after speaker, Mark regularly gives public talks, leads retreats, and hosts study days in both the UK and the USA. He is also a familiar voice on BBC Radio Wales, contributing to programmes like Prayer for the Day and Weekend Word, where he offers thoughtful reflections on faith, ethics, and the complexities of modern life.
When he’s not writing, teaching, or speaking, Mark can often be found walking in the breathtaking landscapes of the Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) with his wife, Sarah, and their three Spaniels: Cuthbert, Humphrey, and Dexter. These moments of connection with nature and loved ones fuel his creativity and remind him of the simple joys that make life meaningful.
Mark’s work is characterized by a warm and often whimsical approach that invites people—whether religious or not—to explore life’s big questions with curiosity and openness. Through his writing, speaking, and teaching, he encourages others to find delight in the everyday and to see the profound in the ordinary.

Tillers of the Soil is a richly woven tale of land, tradition, and resilience, set in the fading days of Roman Britain, where a family fights to hold onto their home, heritage, and way of life.
