Richard Backhouse read Economics at Selwyn College, Cambridge, with the sincere intention of becoming a journalist. Initially distracted by the possibility of a PhD, he became a teacher ‘by accident’. After stints at Oundle School and Bradfield College, where he was Head of Economics, Director of Pastoral and Extra-Curricular Activities, and a Housemaster, he was appointed as Principal of Monkton Combe School in 2005, where he enjoys the challenge of leading a school which is both Christian and in the mainstream of the British Public School tradition.
