Dean of Durham marks his retirement with new book

PRESS RELEASE: Durham-based publisher Sacristy Press will publish a book featuring sermons delivered by the retiring Anglican Dean of Durham during his time at Durham Cathedral.

Christ in a Choppie Box: Sermons from North East England (to be published on 1 October) is an edited collection of sermons by The Very Revd Michael Sadgrove, Dean of Durham, to mark his retirement at the end of September 2015.

Michael Sadgrove has been Dean of Durham since 2003. During his time in the post he has preached many well-crafted sermons on a wide variety of topics, from the Iraq invasions to “digital lambs”. This volume, published by Sacristy Press, contains some of his finest and most thought-provoking sermons from the past 12 years.

The book includes a foreword by the Archbishop of Canterbury, The Most Revd Justin Welby, a former Bishop of Durham, who says:

Michael’s sermons are both beautiful and inspiring, leaving me thirsty for more. They are beautifully crafted and admirably concise.

The collection has been edited and compiled by Carol Harrison, formerly a theologian at Durham University, now at Christ Church, Oxford.

The Very Revd Michael Sadgrove, Dean of Durham, said:

I have always taken preaching seriously. I believe it is right at the heart of public Christian ministry, even in the twenty-first century.

We are very fortunate in this Cathedral with the consistently high quality of preaching; I believe there are those who are drawn to cathedrals by the preaching as much as the liturgy, music and architecture. It matters that we do everything we can to present ‘intelligent Christianity’ to the church and the world, promote a reflective wisdom in people, stimulate and stretch the imagination and vision, speak of God in ways that are not only faithful to the scriptures but also connect with our own times and contemporary concerns.

Richard Hilton, Operations Director at Sacristy press, said:

It has been a delight to work with Michael and Carol on this project. It is a tribute to their skill and imagination that the Archbishop of Canterbury has written such an enthusiastic and complimentary foreword to the book. We at Sacristy Press wish Michael all the best in his retirement after so many years of service to Durham Cathedral.

Christ in a Choppie Box will be launched in Durham Cathedral Shop on Tuesday 22 September 2015 at 18.30 (RSVP to events@durhamcathedral.co.uk or 0191 386 8669), and will be officially released on 1 October.
